I’m pretty sure that most residents of Edinburgh are unaware of the Signet Library, never mind, having visited the venue. Which is a shame, because the Signet Library is one of the most elegant, inspiring and unique venues in the city.
The Signet Library is operated by the The Society of Writers to Her Majesty’s Signet (or the WS Society). The WS Scoiety was a private society that carried out legal work for the early Kings of Scotland, today the organisation is an independent professional body for solicitors (or writers, as they were once referred to), and is one of the oldest professional bodies in the world, dating back to the 1500s. The library’s interiors mirror the Regency period in when it was built (it opened in 1822), and is festooned with ornate details, elegant interiors and flambouyant architecture. There are several rooms in the Library today used for weddings, ceremonies, family parties and corporate events.
Catering at the Signet Library is provided by the very excellent Heritage Portfolio company. The company manage many of the top venues in Edinburgh.
During August the Signet Library opens up to the general public and the Pommery Champagne Cafe Bar serves up the finest drinks, afternoon teas and refreshments to those who venture inside the fabulous venue.
The Signet Library does not have its own accommodation but there are many excellent hotels and apartments near this fantastic venue in the heart of Edinburgh’s Old Town. The Signet Library can be found on Parliament Square next to St. Giles’ Cathedral. For the latest Hotel Deals near the Signet Library simply click on the button below.
