With Edinburgh’s Hogmanay being a distant memory, and the weather turning a lot crisper, you’d think that Edinburgh would be very quiet in January and that not much is happening in Scotland’s capital city, but you’d be wrong, so wrong.
January is a terrific time to visit Edinburgh as there are lots of hotel bargains to pick from and there’s still loads of unique and interesting things happening. For example, January 25th is Burns Night, and the country will be celebrating the life and loves of our national poet, and the restaurants and bars of Edinburgh will be buzzing with parties for the great man. Join us with a dram and a recite a few lines of inspiring poetry.
Also, the National Gallery has an impressive exhibition on during January that looks at the work of The Two Roberts: Robert Colquhoun and Robert MacBryde, two of Scotland’s most successful artists of recent times.
For those looking for a major musical show to enjoy the pop along to The Playhouse to witness Wicked, a global phenomenon on the stage. And for those with a little lust left for Xmas, then why not take a look at the family-friendly Aladdin at the King’s Theatre.
To help you back a hotel bargain this January, I’ve had a look at accommodation deals available over the month’s weekends, and highlighted a few below that really do offer tremendous value for money. So let’s begin (I’ve take a look at all types of accommodation, so there should be a deal here for everyone, regardless of budget);
- The West End Hotel Edinburgh – this budget hotel and hostel is one of the best value-for-money places to stay in Edinburgh. The hotel has its own lively bar that makes it a great places to enjoy a meal, a band or a few drinks.
- Edinburgh Minto Hotel – if you’re looking for a great value hotel on the south side of Edinburgh be sure to check out the Minto Hotel. The breakfasts here are ace, the bar is most enjoyable and the staff will put you at ease with helpful travel tips.
- Novotel Edinburgh Park – if you prefer your accommodation with a few more stars (4 in fact) then you can grab a real bargain by staying at the Novotel at Edinburgh Park. This smart hotel offers free parking, and is supremely well connected to the city centre by train, tram and bus. Enjoy a few lengths in the pool, workout hard in the gym and relax afterwards in the restaurant and bar.
- Apex Haymarket Hotel – this professionally managed hotel in the city’s West End offers a smart bar and restaurant for guests. The hotel is well loacted for transport links into Princess Street – Haymarket train station (Edinburgh’s second train station) is 100m away, as is the tram stop for Haymarket.
